What is a smart hydrogel?
A smart hydrogel is a three-dimensional, cross-linked polymeric network that can absorb and retain a large amount of water while responding to specific environmental stimuli. Unlike conventional hydrogels, smart hydrogels can undergo reversible changes in their swelling, structure, permeability, or drug-release behavior in response to changes in external conditions.
How does it respond?
Common stimuli include pH, temperature, ionic strength, light, electric or magnetic fields, enzymes, and specific biomolecules. For example, a pH-responsive hydrogel may remain relatively stable in the stomach but swell at the higher pH of the intestine, enabling site-specific drug release. Similarly, a temperature-responsive hydrogel can undergo a change in solubility or swelling near physiological temperature and may be used for in situ drug delivery.
Why it matters
Because of their high water content, biocompatibility, and tunable responsiveness, smart hydrogels have important applications in controlled and targeted drug delivery, wound healing, tissue engineering, biosensing, regenerative medicine, and pharmaceutical formulations.
